Understanding Your Camera’s Histogram – The Basics

Your camera’s histogram is a graphical representation of the tonal values of the image you playback on the screen of your digital camera.  It tells you the range of shadows, mid-tones, and highlights of the image.  It indicates whether the exposure is correct regardless of how good it looks displayed on your camera’s LCD screen.

In an average scene with some dark areas, some light areas, and an easy transition between the two with most of the info in the middle you will get a perfectly even mountain.
