What is the best camera?

What is the best camera? – It’s not what you think.

What is the best camera? I often hear this question which is usually followed by “I want to get a really good camera and take great photographs.  What do you recommend?”

What is the best camera has nothing to do with how good your photographs are. Maybe that’s not the answer you’re looking for. Yes, you’ve seen ads featuring fantastic images promoting the latest and greatest cameras used to make those images.  And, those ads can be very persuasive!

Until I turned pro, I was captivated with those beautiful images. I still am but admire them from a different standpoint now:  How did they do that?  What lighting technique was used – natural light or flash?  What focal length lens?  What influenced the look and feel of the imagery? … are among the questions I ask.

What is the best camera? – You might be surprised.

Taking great photographs has everything to do with you and how you see light, connect with your subject, and your intuition that motivates that “decisive moment” when you press the shutter release.

The camera – any camera – is just a tool.  Of course, you have to use the right tool for a particular shoot. But, you can practice your photography anywhere with whatever camera you have – with great results.

So, what is the best camera?  The one you have with you.  Most often, that will be your smartphone – iPhone or Android – because that’s the one you always have with you assuming you’re a smartphone user.  (By the way, the sunflower photograph above was taken with my old Samsung Galaxy S3!)

If you want to improve your photography, even if you only have a smartphone, the following article provides some very useful tips.  Check it out!

“The great team at Artifact Uprising has created a strong list of tips by some of the top mobile photographers on Instagram. Having been engulfed in the mobile photography, or iPhoneography, world for almost two years I have found that in the end the camera you use has nothing to do with the quality of your images you create. Just to clarify, by quality I mean the moment captured and the purpose behind the shot, not the pixel density. These guys truly are proof that the best camera is the one you have with you.”
